Australians spend 90 per cent of their time indoors, 7 per cent in cars and only 3 per cent outdoors (CSIRO, 1998), yet focus remains on outdoor air quality. Since the energy crisis in the early seventies, houses and buildings have been designed to conserve energy usage by restricting air inflow; this has resulted in much poorer indoor air quality.

Mobile Phone Tower and Electromagnetic Radiation Testing |
In today’s world of modern communication we are all constantly bombarded with and exposed to Radio frequency (RF) or microwave fields. Exposure to these fields can come from many sources such as , mobile
and cordless phones, mobile phone towers, radio and television
transmissions and WiFi appliances such as computers and game consoles;
however we can make choices and changes within our environments that
minimize our exposure to RF fields.
EKO Building Biology provides testing and cost effective shielding advice at an affordable price.

In today’s world of modern convenience we are all constantly exposed to electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Humans evolved against a background of natural electromagnetic radiation from the cosmos and terrestrial sources, most of these frequencies of radiation don’t adversely affect us, although electromagnetic frequencies from man-made sources may be detrimental to our health as many studies indicate.

EKO Building Biology provides services for air sampling for
inhalable and respirable dust in both residential and commercial premises.
All respirated dusts must be considered harmful to some
degree
Inhalable dusts or course particulates consist of particles
sized between 2.5 and 10 microns; these can get caught in the mucous membranes
of the upper respiratory system causing health concerns such as asthma and
increased respiratory illnesses such as coughing, irritation and breathing
difficulties.
Dusts and particulates that are smaller than 2.5 microns are
called respirable dusts as they can penetrate deep into the lungs. Generally
the smaller the particulate the more severe the health effects such as lung
diseases, heart problems and premature death.
EKO Building Biology follows Australian Standards AS 3640-2004 and AS 2985-2004 when sampling for inhalable and respirable dusts.

EKO Building Biology provide VOC testing and sampling to both commercial and residential properties.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are emitted from our environment in the
form of gases. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, which can have short term or
long-term health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs can be up to 10 times
higher indoors than outdoors and come in the form of lacquers, paints, cleaning
products, MDF board, new carpets, glues, office equipment such as
printers and photocopiers just to name a few.
The Health effects of VOCs include eye, nose and throat irritations,
headaches, dizziness, nausea, kidney, liver and central nervous system damage.
Many VOCs are also known to cause cancer in both animals and humans such
as formaldehyde, that is found in many common building materials and indoor
treatments; benzene found in petrol and methylene chloride found in paint
strippers. (US EPA).

Healthy and sustainable building design |
|
On average people spend around 90% of their day indoors so it makes sense to create buildings that support our health, unfortunately most new construction does the opposite. As normal buildings contain thousands of chemicals within their
construction materials it makes sense to use products that have minimal
or no health effects to the occupants.
